American Airlines introduces features for automatic seat upgrades and snack reservations, improving in-flight experiences for top-tier members.

American Airlines is rolling out new features designed to streamline the travel experience for its frequent flyers. AAdvantage members traveling solo can now set a seat preference and have the airline automatically move them to a matching available seat. This new feature, dubbed "Automatic Seat Change," aims to reduce the need for travelers to continuously check the seat map.
Automatic Seat Changes for AAdvantage Members
AAdvantage members can specify their preference for aisle, middle, or window seats, and they’ll receive these automatic changes as seats open up. The new functionality appears under “Trip options” in the airline's app and allows users to prioritize seat types rather than waitlisting for a specific seat number. Reports from aviation commentator JonNYC indicate that this upgrade is already generating interest among frequent travelers, who will appreciate the ability to avoid undesirable seat assignments.

The feature will keep moves within the same cabin without incurring additional fees, but excludes exit row seats. Seat change requests will be prioritized by AAdvantage status and the time when members set their preferences. Once a matching seat is located, the automatic feature will turn off. Users can toggle this feature on or off, but it will automatically stop functioning 24 hours prior to departure.
That 24-hour limitation presents an important caveat. Many travelers tend to reassess available seating close to their flight time, particularly after potential upgrades are cleared or as passengers make last-minute alterations to their itineraries. Gold members in particular should remain vigilant in checking for Main Cabin Extra availability, especially since their access begins just as this automated process halts.
Comparatively, United Airlines rolled out a similar automatic seat preference feature in March 2024, which included a broader set of options until 12 hours before departure. The airline reported significant customer satisfaction, as over 30% of those who saved preferences were successfully reassigned to their desired seat. With this new update, it seems American Airlines is stepping up its game.
Pre-Ordering Snacks for Elite Members
In a separate but equally significant update, Executive Platinum and ConciergeKey members will now have the option to pre-order their complimentary snack from the Main Cabin. This feature, which is also accessible through the app, allows elite travelers to ensure they receive their preferred food item on the flight.
NEW: 2 new exciting features are coming to the @AmericanAir mobile app! First, automatic seat changes — if a different seat you want opens up, AA will automatically move you and let you know based on the parameters you set. Second, if you’re an EP or CK and entitled to a complimentary snack in the Main Cabin, you can now pre-order that to ensure you get your preferred snack onboard!

Previously, American offered advance food reservations on flights over 1,100 miles but limited that capability to passengers purchasing meals. While pre-ordering food is welcomed by those who often face disappointment when the snack cart reaches their row, there's still work to be done to enhance the experience for all coach passengers. For example, Alaska Airlines allows all coach travelers to pre-order meals, a concept that could be beneficial for American to consider extending to its entire customer base.
The success of these upgrades suggests that American Airlines is actively working to compete more effectively in the space, especially as they look to retain loyalty among elite travelers. As the airline moves forward, many will be watching how these improvements resonate in practice and whether they expand these features more widely across their service offerings in the future.
