Experiencing Authentic Shore Lunch at the Eagle Nest Lodge in Manitoba

The crackle of a wood fire and the aroma of sizzling fish create an unforgettable backdrop at Eagle Nest Lodge, a fishing retreat tucked away in Manitoba. After catching walleye earlier that day, I found myself enjoying a shore lunch experience that truly exemplifies Canada's rich lodge culture, one that spans over a century.

Located about 70 miles northeast of Winnipeg, Eagle Nest Lodge is a gem operated by three generations of the Pedruchny family for more than six decades. Shaun and Jessica Jackson, the current owners, have cultivated an atmosphere that makes guests feel right at home. Access to the lodge can be via boat or a scenic flight, which isn’t common. I had the unique chance to fly in on a Cessna 208 Caravan, a rare amphibious aircraft that provides stunning views of the Winnipeg River and surrounding wilderness.

Upon arrival, guests are greeted with a warm welcome alongside shrimp cocktails and drinks in the inviting Eagle Nest Club Room. This central hub embodies a true lodge atmosphere, equipped with a bar serving an array of cocktails and specialty beers, while also featuring a gym and a hot tub. With six cabins accommodating up to 40 guests, lodging is both spacious and comfortable, offering modern amenities alongside a rustic touch.

My cabin, Walking Eagle, provided a cozy retreat after days filled with fishing and adventure. Each cabin has distinctive layouts but offers essential comforts: new mattresses, linens, and amenities like a wood stove and air conditioning. Morning coffee is delivered fresh to every cabin, a delightful touch that kickstarts the day right.

A Culinary Tradition: Shore Lunch Perfection

The culinary experience at Eagle Nest is exceptional, from breakfast to dinner. Freshly made waffles and Southwest-style hashes started my mornings, while dinner offerings included hearty dishes like prime rib and barbecue beef brisket. However, the highlight was undoubtedly the shore lunch crafted from the walleye I had just caught.

At the heart of every shore lunch is the fishing. Many guests arrive to reel in the best of Manitoba's waterways—smallmouth bass, walleye, and northern pike. The tradition here focuses on “eater” walleye, ideally sized at 14 to 17 inches for the best flavor. When fishing, my guide Dawson skillfully navigated the boat to a well-known area called The Oaks. Here, the current and rocky shoreline offer a bountiful environment for catching walleye. Although I managed to catch a 20-inch walleye, it wouldn’t be suitable for shore lunch, thanks to local size regulations. However, our group collectively snagged enough eaters for an unforgettable meal.

Crafting the Perfect Shore Lunch

Shore lunch at Eagle Nest Lodge captivated me with its blend of flavors and meticulous preparation. Freshly caught walleye were fried alongside golden potatoes, sautéed onions, and homemade tartar sauce. Uniquely, breaded mushrooms added a delightful touch to the typical shore lunch setup, showcasing the lodge's flair for culinary creativity. Staff expertly prepared each dish, transforming a simple riverside meal into a memorable dining experience.

Observing the meticulous steps of meal preparation reassured me that even a casual shore lunch can be a thoughtfully curated experience. Rather than just a meal, it became a celebration of our day's catch, expertly garnished and served in a picturesque setting. Contrary to my usual shore lunch experiences that often leave one ready for a nap, this nutritious and hearty meal provided the perfect fuel for an afternoon of fishing adventures.

The experience at Eagle Nest Lodge encompassed remarkable fishing, nourishing meals, and a welcoming atmosphere, proving that this retreat is a must-visit destination for any fishing enthusiast traveling through Manitoba. Whether you’re after the thrill of the catch or just looking to savor some excellent local cuisine, Eagle Nest Lodge delivers on all fronts.
